Education

We empower our Micronesian children to become productive, ethical, and positive leaders in Hawaii and the region by engaging in educational programs and opportunities.

  1. Educational Research: MU-BI co-sponsors educational research projects to document the experiences of the Micronesian diaspora in Hawai’i. Topics have included discrimination, fishing practices, rights and responsibilities, and charter school feasibility study. 
  2. Hawaii Board of Education Partnership: MU-BI organizes and facilitated focus meetings on behalf of Hawaii Board of Education to help improve education for all of our kids.
  3. Bilingualism Task Force: MU-BI Board members have served on the Advisory Board for DOE Multilingualism Task Force to help produce the updates to the Policy 105-14 Multilingualism for Equitable Education  
  4. School Outreach: MU-BI members visit school campuses to provide cultural training for teachers and also provide mentorship, encouragement, and support for Micronesian students
  5. Pacific Youth Empowerment for Success (PacYES): MU-BI has been leading the annual youth conference aimed to inspire and empower Pacific high school students on the Big Island for college, career, and community readiness. Visit website
  6. Navigating Success Academy: Initial plans have started to establish a Micronesian culture-based public charter school.
  7. Ethnic Graduations: MU-BI leaders have been part of the Remathau Graduation in Kona celebrating the accomplishments of students from the outer islands of Yap.
